Review: Google Pixel 4a

Google Pixel 4a

The Pixel 4a is the budgetary Pixel Smartphone that everyone was eagerly waiting for. Google has been focusing on the high price point smartphones for 4 years. Finally, Google considered making a budget-friendly Smartphone that costs less but can offer the great camera experience and solid performance that the series is known for. However, we are glad Google came with Pixel 4a, a Smartphone that focuses on the features that matter to us as a Smartphone user like the compact size, long-lasting battery, and great camera. With pixel 4a you get a smooth Google Assistant integration, a clean android experience with 3 years of guaranteed updates, also a seriously impressive photography experience considering pixel 4a just come with one camera. So here Pixel 4a comes with a competitive price of Rs.29,999($349.99) making it the most affordable Pixel phone in India. Here’s my take on Pixel 4a, Google’s latest mid-range phone.

What’s the new Google Pixel 4a?

Design

Design

  • Headphone jack plus stereo speakers are added
  • No premium touch
  • Can easily be used one-handed

Smartphones are getting bigger day by day in the era of bigger display it’s glad to see that a smartphone is released by Google that perfectly fit in the hand. For people who are a sucker for the compact phone, pixel 4a’s 5.8-inch screen is a perfect size i.e. neither too big nor too small. It feels really great on one hand and is easy to operate one-handed.

With pixel 4a we get a compact Android you get in measuring of 144 x 69.4 x 8.2mm, which makes it smaller than the Pixel 3a while boasting a bigger screen.

It is light too tripping the scales at just 143g which makes it lighter than pixel 3a and iPhone SE which are smaller in size than pixel 4a.

That’s due to the Pixel 4a’s polycarbonate unibody- while it helps the handset shed some weight, we concluded that it does not look or feel particularly premium.

It cannot seem an issue to you but at this price segment, there are various other options to be considered at this price as you can hold metal and glass-covered handset that look and feel much more premium.

Pixel 4a offers a 5.81 OLED display with Full HD+ resolution and HDR support. This time Pixel 4a smartphone to come with an all-screen, bezel-less display with a screen flowing around the punch hole that houses the front-facing camera in the top left camera.

According to Google, the Pixel 4a comes with no bezels but while looking at it closely there’s still silver at the base of the display and edging around the rest of the display and edging around the rest of the display is thicker than on the other rivals.

Still, it provides an aesthetically pleasing finish, and while the selfie camera is not an issue as it does not sit in the notification bar.

Gorilla Glass 3 protection is provided on Pixel 4a that would protect it against small scruff and scratches but we can’t consider it to be tough glass as it’s not the most advanced version. We can say it’s a clever move by Google for the cost-cutting, but if you are reasonably careful with the phone it shouldn’t be an issue.

Camera

  • Two cameras setup: 12.2MP on the rear, 8MP on the front
  • Impressive image processing produces high-quality snaps
  • Night photography produces decent low-light shots

Pixel 4a offers just two cameras 21.2MP on the rear and 8MP on the front, there aren’t too many other phones with so few cameras, especially in the crowded mid-tier where manufacturers tend to scatter cameras around that try to make their handset standout, although new iPhone SE is another.

The back camera on the Pixel 4a you get 12.2MP that offer f/1.7 aperture and an 84-degree field of view. The phone is capable to shoot 4K video at 30fps, 1080p at 30fps, 60fps and 120fps, and 720p at 30fps, 60fps and a super-slow 240fps.

Camera

The camera setup may not look much for people when comparing to the 3-4 setups on the back of many of the pixel 4a’s competitors but the main camera can still hold that monopoly of its own.

The photography in Pixel 4a is just so easy just on point and the camera is combined with Google’s intelligence software processing, which refers to that there will be a great output in every scenario.

You get some of the modes from which you can choose from if you want something slightly different, including panorama and portrait which provide the latter which produces background blur effect using purely AI, as Pixel 4a lacks a depth sensor.

We can say that Pixel 4a takes high-quality images with absolutely brilliant details. The details such as sky which looks blue, leaves of trees look green, etc. the details in the pictures are so fine and do a great job in capturing fines details such as shadows, skin details, and the colours.

We are impressed by the low light photography as well. The night mode images are so good and scream loud why pixel 4a is the night king in photography.

Battery life

  • Last a full day with average use
  • No wireless charging, instead fast 18W charger in the box
  • Gaming and video playback considerably drain the battery

Pixels 4a have a 3,140mAh non-removable battery provided with an 18watt charger in the box. Google claims to get 14 hours of battery life with Pixel 4a from a single charge thanks to the firm’s adaptive battery technology but we were not able to achieve that.

There is an always-on display feature that is activated by default, but if that is switched off there is a slight improvement in the battery life. We can say that battery drains while gaming and video playback.

No wireless support for charging is provided but a plus point to be noted is the 18Watt changer that provides the handset with fast charging capabilities.

Performance and software

  • Clean and easy to use Stock Android 10
  • Prominent Google Assistant features
  • Snapdragon 730, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage

The chipset provided in Google Pixel 4a is a powerful processor that ensures smooth usage. It has a Snapdragon 730 chipset, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.

These specs are not pretty good when we look around in terms of specs sheet the Google Pixel 4a is outgunned but when talking about the price it’s a good deal from Google who has been a fan of the series.

We can say that it can cope with any app or games that run but you may find that some take too much loading time especially with the big online games or intensive application. A heavy game like PUBG can be run at HD graphics with high fps.

The smartphone comes with Google stock android 10 which runs well and is easy to navigate. All the Pixel Smartphone focuses on Google assistant with which multiple operations can be assessed.

Once the Google assistant is active you get the assistant to do numerous things, from opening the app and setting alarms to even sending text messages.

Why buy?

  • One-handed Smartphone

As the Pixel 4a is just 5.81inch which perfectly fits in the hand as well as very comfortable to use one-handed. It’s a very compact smartphone with round edges and a touch polycarbonate body which makes it easy to hold and use.

  • You want an affordable phone with fuss-free photos

The camera setup offered in pixel 4a is not flexible at this price point, but they do offer an easy point and shoot experience which more often means you can take quality photos with a little effort.

Why not buy it?

  • Looking for the Best handset at an affordable range

As Pixel 4a is in the competitive field with the competitors offering more specs sheet. We can agree on the note that the competitors are offering the handset with 5G connectivity, multiple cameras, a bigger screen, and more special features.

  • Wanted a Gaming Phone

We didn’t say that you can’t do gaming in the Pixel 4a it’s just that it comes with a few compromises. Also, the battery consumption is more during gaming. The competitors can provide better handset in terms of battery and better display size

  • Heavy mobile user

You can survive a day with minimal usage but if you are a heavy user of gaming and social media then you may need a charger again. The battery can survive up to a day with minimal usage.
